How consistency is crucial to the design of products and services

Do you have a particular way you like your coffee or do you appreciate the accuracy in which your accountant files your taxes? I’m guess that’s going to be a yes to both of those questions. Consistency matters to you as a consumer and you a service provider. Whether you work for yourself or for a corporation, consistency is the foundation for streamlining your process and creating a satisfied customers. For this week, try to be aware of consistency in your life. Reflect on how consistency effects you as a consumer and how your consistency effects the personal and professional areas of your life. Make a list of inconsistencies and brainstorm solutions to create consistency.

PROBLEM SOLVING

What bothers you so much that you have mentally invented a product or created a solution? If you have not created an actual work around, then how much would you pay for the solution if it existed?

This weekend, solve a common problem that would make your life easier. Write down the major issue followed by a big vision void of obstacles. Draw a quick sketch if it’s a product or write out the functional characteristic if it’s a process solution.

Name it and possibly take it further and price out manufacturing costs or hours needed to create and implement a process solution. (This is where you fall down the research rabbit hole.)

There you go! You are now a problem solver and possibly an inventor. Shark Tank, here you come!

Honest Selling

Have you ever purchased a product and felt as if you were lied to about the outcome? That is going to be an unfortunate, yes. We have all experienced this and it causes hesitation and distrust for the next time a great looking product claims to provide exactly what we “need.” If you were to create a product or service, what would it be and what would be three main benefits? Think about some brands you trust and why. What should be disclosed to consumers so they can make the most informed choices?

If you have business and are looking to hiring an ad agency or design studio, think about how your copywriting, photos, graphics and colors communicate an honest depiction of your products or services. Even if you have to share an unfavorable attribute, it could be done with humor and a refocus on the major benefit. People can relate to honesty especially an insecurity. Humans have insecurities and so do businesses. Focus on the strengths while keeping an eye on the weaknesses.

This weekend sketch ideas for that book you’ve been writing in your head for as long as you can remember. Then, try to write a rough draft of your biography or about the author. Look back over the posts from this week to use the exercises as guides. This is a creative activity to get your mind and body warmed up for taking action on your dreams and goals one sketchy doodle at a time. Enjoy!
